Employees Leave Bosses right? - But can Bosses do Something to Keep Them Happy?

03-July-2018 / Ammar Ahmed

We have frequently heard that employees leave their bosses; not jobs. But is there anything that a boss can do to keep his employee happy?

Majority of bosses believe that they have done all that can keep their employees happy and have fulfilled their responsibility by giving them the salary. But it's not all that can make an employee happy and productive.

There is one thing which a boss can adapt and feel the difference. This one characteristic is HONESTY.

Honesty is not as simple as giving the money back to the cashier when he gives us some extra cash and you stop him and say; "please take your money back; you have given me extra cash by mistake".

Being honest as a boss is some bigger challenge and holds much more difficulty than simply giving the cash back to the cashier. Following are the points that you can follow to exhibit honesty towards to your employee and win his heart:

Provide True Feedback

If a boss is honest, he would keep his employee updated with his performance level and try to save him from falling. An honest boss guides his employee how to fix problems.

Giving feedback does not mean that the boss expresses rudeness. If there is such a thing, then it is sure that it's not true feedback.

Provide Unambiguous Expectations

An honest manager is not into giving surprises at the end of the year. Rather, clear expectations are set by him and regular follow up is taken (probably quarterly). There is clarity of expectations or goals between the manager and his subordinate. Hence, there is no guessing, but only facts.

No one is Perfect

An honest manager is not frightened of his mistakes. He faces them and says thanks when corrected by his subordinate.

It's not easy for one to admit mistakes as it's against the nature of a human. But this is where the thin line exists between a charismatic leader and just a manager.

This quality can be taken a step ahead by adapting the habit of admitting mistakes by a boss before his boss, which is observed by department subordinates as an example.

For example: If an employee in accounts department makes a mistake and that is brought up after Audit, and the manager is called up to justify, so the honest manager would be the one who takes it as his responsibility rather than blaming his subordinate. This is just because a manager is responsible for monitoring the work  of his subordinates.

The simple method to keep strong monitoring is to develop Work Flow Procedures.

Keep Your Employees Aware of the Situations

Many bosses hold a policy of two way discussion, but this is untrue in most of the situations. They like to hear things from subordinates but hate to share what's going on in the organisation like Financials due to the fear that employees would demand for raises and bonuses.

It's legitimate to hide some business secrets, but hiding everything? - This creates a gap.

Hence, a good boss is intelligent in a way that he touches the market and pays his team accordingly.

This way he needs not hide financials and can take great help from his people during financial crisis. Also, during good financials to maintain the pace with everyone's contribution since he is confident that he is paying his team enough.

Stay With Your Words After Your Subordinate Hiring

Do not exaggerate with your candidate during interview and do not over commit during Job Offer. All unrealistic commitments lead to distrust at a later stage.

There are both bad and good parts of job. So you need to highlight the clear picture before your potential subordinate about the challenges the job has and possible growth upon meeting those challenges. At the same time, this should not be a threatening communication.

It must be remembered that there is comfort when there is clarity and honesty in communication. Hence, you need to be transparent with your subordinates to win their hearts.
